The perceived weakness of opposition parties some months to 2019 general election has been credited as possible reasons for the nonchalant posture of the ruling party All Progressive Congress (APC)

A Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) that metamorphosed into political party, African Democratic Congress (ADC) by the Egba-Born former Nigeria President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo is gradually disintegrating.

The major opposition party PDP has also continued to move from one crisis to another.

Dr. Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) and Dr Abduljalil Tafawa-Balewa led Nigeria Intervention Movement (NIM) which also metamorphosed into political party, Alliance for New Nigeria (ANN) ahead of 2019 general election but is also yet to gain the required recognition.

People likened the activities of NIM to those of Human Rights Organizations rather than a political party aiming to contest to win election.

Apart from PDP, ADC and ANN, it is hard to point at any other political parties out of the 48 existing parties that has the strength to challenge the ruling party in terms of strength, financial capacity, organizational ability and other attributes that takes party to win election.

Although, while there are ongoing discussion among 30 political parties including Labour Party (LP), Alliance for Democracy (AD), Action Alliance (AA), Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA), Young Democratic Party (YDP), Democratic Alternative (DA), National Conscience Party (NCP) and others for a merger, the development in ADC, where a faction was said to have evolved may jeopardize the coalition.

HOW ADC SPLIT BEGAN
While the leadership of ADC gathered at Sheraton Hotel in Lagos State on Tuesday for a programme it tagged:
‘Coalition for Electoral Integrity’, to educate the electorate on the need to protect and judiciously use their votes instead of selling same to politicians on election day for peanuts, a group within the party that claimed to be loyal to Chief Obasanjo announced it’s withdrawal at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja and named itself the NEW ADC.
