Breaking News: INEC To Postpone Feb 16th Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is considering postponing Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections, PREMIUM TIMES has learnt. Multiple sources close to the electoral commission said the postponement being considered is due to some logistics challenges being faced by the commission in many states. The electoral body is facing difficulty distributing sensitive electoral materials to some states of the federation, an official said. A formal announcement is expected on Friday night, our sources said. It is unclear at this time what the new election date would be. “There will definitely be a postponement but we are yet to take a decision on the new date,” an official said. Another official said the commission is considering fixing the elections for Sunday. Our sources said INEC commissioners are currently locked in a meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja. Some of the states where the logistic challenges are said to occur include Niger and Ekiti.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Anambra says it has taken delivery of all sensitive  materials needed for the smooth conduct of the Feb. 16 Presidential and National elections. Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) made the disclosure while briefing journalists at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in Awka on Thursday. He said that the materials for the 21 Local Government Areas had been sorted out and would be escorted to the council areas by securities operatives deployed for INEC elections. The REC said that all the 21 Divisional Police Officers in the state were on ground to collect the batch allocated to their various council areas. Orji promised that all materials would be deposited in their council areas on or before 6pm. He said that the commission had received full replacement of all election materials gutted by fire in their storage on Feb. 12, adding that it was ready to conduct smooth elections come Feb. 16 and March 2.

Polls: INEC engages 20 physically challenged in Nasarawa

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Nasarawa State has engaged more than twenty physically Challenged persons as Ad- hoc staff for the conduct of the forthcoming general election in the state . The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Dr Uthman Ajidagba announced this in Lafia at a Sensitization Forum for People with Disabilities ahead of this month’s general election. According to Ajidagba, over sixty persons with disabilities across the 13 local government areas of the state participated in the sensitization exercise adding that those with visually impaired, the crippled, the deaf and dumb among others attended the forum. According to the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, “ the sensitisation forum was part of activities of the commission towards ensuring that people with disabilities are fully involved in the electoral process. Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from presenting Tonye Cole and Magnus Abe as governorship candidates in the general elections. Justice Omotosho also nullified all direct and indirect primaries conducted by both factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. According to Omotosho, none of the primaries were conducted according to the law. The judge noted that the INEC did not do well by submitting names of candidates without consideration of previous court orders.
